BNP Paribas in Ireland is delighted to have been awarded as the winner of the Best Large Sponsorship Category of the Allianz Business to Arts Awards 2011 for its partnership with the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The Bank collaborated with IMMA for ‘The Moderns: The Arts in Ireland from 1900s to the 1970s’ which ran from October 2010 until February this year.
“The Moderns: The Arts in Ireland from 1900s to the 1970s” featured over 450 works by more than 200 artists, including exceptional examples of painting, sculpture, photography, film, architecture, literature, music and design of Irish significance from the 20th century. The exhibition was IMMA’s largest and most ambitious exhibition to date, occupying almost all of IMMA’s main building and featuring Francis Bacon, Eileen Gray, Mainie Jellett, Jack B Yeats, Michael Scott, Sam Stephenson, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Anthony Cronin, Brian Friel and Seamus Heaney.

The exhibition, which was officially opened by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, was a landmark for IMMA, the celebration of Irish culture and the involvement of BNP Paribas in the Arts in Ireland.
The exhibition attracted 135,000 visitors to the museum, 28% of which had never been to IMMA before aided by a number of significant digital ‘firsts’: a website was developed specifically for the exhibition, a genuine online museum, including a virtual tour, educational avatar, 3-dimensional sculptures and school tours. An iPhone app was developed and made available to download free. In April 2011, a 500-page book on The Moderns was published, which immediately became the seminal book on modernism in Ireland.
On September 5th, Gilles de Decker, Country Head for BNP Paribas in Ireland was delighted to accept the Award from Ireland’s President, Mary McAleese in Dublin Castle, saying that ‘BNP Paribas’ regard the sponsorship of The Moderns as a successful partnership with IMMA. It supported a landmark exhibition for the museum while providing both access and awareness to a wide public including its clients and employees.
